What 20 years of dashboards taught me about trust
Twenty years of building dashboards taught me one thing: nobody trusts a number they cannot trace.
Early on I optimized for density — more charts, more KPIs, more surface area per screen. It looked authoritative. It also taught people to ignore it, because a wall of confident numbers with no provenance reads as noise the moment one of them is wrong.
Trust is a design material
The dashboards that lasted were the ones that showed their work: where the data came from, when it last updated, and what it deliberately left out. Trust is not a tone you set with a color palette. It is something you earn one honest empty state at a time.
